Donga was the pen name of the French cartoonist, painter, caricaturist and poster artist Pierre Duffourc. He was born in Bayonne in south-western France in 1908 as the son of a Spanish father. Abandoned by his mother to public assistance, Pierre Donga spent his childhood on farms where he worked from the age of eight.
In the 1930s he was involved in Spanish avant-garde circles in France and took part in the Spanish Civil War. Then, a committed journalist, he played a role during the Popular Front.
Painter, theater decorator, P. Donga worked mainly as a journalist and press cartoonist. Before 1940, he collaborated with Hommes du Jour, at Paris-Soir. After the Liberation, he published articles and drawings in numerous newspapers: L'Avant-Garde, La Vie Ouvrière, Regards, La Terre, L'Humanité, L'Humanité-Dimanche, etc., specializing as a judicial journalist and sporty.
His poster of the actress Germaine Kerjean is one of his most famous posters.
Germaine Kerjean was born on July 22, 1893 in Le Havre, France as Germaine Charlotte Rose Chapelle. She is known for her work on Les mystères de Paris (1943), The Affairs of Messalina (1951) and It Happened at the Inn (1943). She died on May 6, 1975 in Viry-Châtillon.
