Description
Artist / Publisher : DAUMIER, H.
Place & date : Paris 1864
Color : Uncolored.
Size : 220 x 255 mm.
Condition : Lithography printed on white wove paper without text on the verso. Flattened center fold.
A comedian dressed in a toga is warning the audience to beware of King Louis-Philip. The allusion is to Demosthenes (384-322 B.C.) warning the Athenians of the upcoming danger presented by Philippe of Macedonia (in that case, Louis-Philippe). Fulchiron (the well-known French writer, industrialist, and politician) is representing Demosthenes, while the scared public is represented by Etienne (then editor of the French newspaper "Le Constitutionnel.") Etienne is lifting the front of his visor to find out who dares to wake him from his well-deserved sleep.
Second state, published in la Caricature, January 8, 1835, by Bauger, rue du Croissant 16 (lower left). Printed by Imprimeurs d'Aubert & Cie at Aubert, Place de la Bourse.
Text written by Alphonse Jean LAURENT-JAN (1808-1877) who was a journalist, writer and associate at the Charivari, where he wrote captions for Daumier’s lithographs. He was also a friend of Balzac.
Known chiefly as a political and social satirist, Honoré DAUMIER used the printmaking process of lithography, still relatively new at the time, to contribute cartoons and caricatures to French news weeklies.

- Description fr
- Stock No
