Marc Chagall (Russian: ???? ????????? ?????, Mark Zakharovich Shagal, Belarusian: ???? ???????i? ?????), born Moïche Zakharovitch Chagalov (Russian: ????e ????????? ???????), is a painter and engraver, born July 7, 1887 in Liozna, near Vitebsk, in Belarus (then integrated into the Russian Empire), naturalized French in 1937, and died on March 28, 1985, in Saint-Paul-de-Vence.
Chagall is one of the most famous artists installed in France in the twentieth century, with Pablo Picasso. His work, without being attached to any school, has characteristics of surrealism and neo-primitivism. Inspired by the Jewish tradition, the shtetl (Jewish village in Eastern Europe) and Russian folklore, she develops her own symbolism, around the intimate life of the artist. Chagall tried, in addition to painting on canvas, engraving, sculpture, poetry, painting on stained glass, enamel, etc.
